T80 Electrical Help please! Empty T80 Electrical Help please!

Hi newbie marmalade here,

My t80 Townmate, starts first kick and runs... But I need some advice before MOT time - think it will pass apart from electrics.
It's 6v and it's been sitting before I got it. Now the headlight works and gets brighter when the engine is running.
I get no neutral light with the engine off (but ignition on) but it also gets brighter when
Brake lights work and get brighter with engine on.
Indicators seem not to work even with engine on.

Few things I have tried
- Wd40 to handlebar indicator switch
- New Battery
- New fuze

What could it be? I assumed it was the battery so got another but its made no difference.
What would you guys try?

Hi Marmalade, the symptoms you describe seem pretty usual for 6v electrics Very Happy Aside from the indicators not working, most 6v machines suffer from the same thing i.e the lights brightening when the engine is running. The indicators may be just needing their connectors cleaned or perhaps the relay is broken. The relay is behind the headlight.
The other thing is that if you have an early model (pre '88) then you could just remove them as they are not required for the mot.

Ok, Cool thanks for your reply. Smile
I did read somewhere that MOT testers allow a bit of wiggle room with 6v and will rev them for headlights etc...
I've just been out in the dark and had another fiddle, the indicators are coming on but are just dim as anything untill you rev the nuts off the bike... I just couldn't see them in the day - but they are staying lit- take it this means it's the relay? So this is what i need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-T-80-Townmate-84-95-Indicator-Relay-/180874079838?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a1cef6e5e#ht_1558wt_1139 sorry excuse all my questions but I thought it was the battery and then I thought I had done something wrong with the battery so I ended up buying another.... feels like I've wasted a fortune (although it's only been £12.99 Razz)

Is the horn usually rubbish too unless the engine is revved? confused

Cheers again!

Nope doh! scratch I didn't! But have now stuck it on a trickle charger overnight to see if that helps - it was meant to be 70 percent dry charged. Hopefully that and the relay will fix my electrical issues and MOT here we come will let you guys know how I get on! Smile

One less t80 sitting on SORN can only be a good thing!
We need to organise a meet somewhere - I'm up for a road trip when I have an MOT! Very Happy

T80 Electrical Help please! Empty T80 lights

Post  JohnW Fri 24 Aug - 8:46

The headlight & rearlight run direct from the generator so will glow brighter when you rev engine - its normal
The brake light, indicators & horn are supplied from the battery which in turn is charged from generator, the indicators will be brighter with engine running & depending upon the state of battery may not work with engine off. As has been suggested charge the battery first, but in view of the time the bike has been off the road it may be duff so you will need a new one. Not that expensive less than a tenner plenty on eBay etc. You may be able to get one from you local bike shop but as most bikes/scooters are 12 volt these days modern bike shops may not stock them.
