Another new T80 carb from Greece Empty WARNING

Post  JohnW Tue 19 May - 9:49

WARNING
These carbs are apparently for a T50 & are only 15mm bore (VM14SH) NOT the 18mm bore (VM16SH) used on the T80.
One of our forum members has recently bought one from the seller in Greece only to find its the wrong carb.

Be aware for sure: I asked about the one the seller has again on eBay and here is their response. Make of it what you will! Rolling Eyes

hi please note: this carburetor is for yamaha townmate t80 22k not 35t is same but have 2 differences in the carb. one is in the throttle cable clip. and the other is the hole. the hole is 16mm not 18mm is the carb is VM16SH not VM14SH (for T50).
also i sold many carbs in UK and all buyers is totally happy.
(the t80 22k engine nomber use 3 gears and the 35T 4 gears so for that is the small difference)
thank you

Looks like Yamaha may have made a different T80 for the Greek market as I can find no ref to a 22K. The T50 engine was (according to the T50/T80 User Manual) a 2FM & the T80 35T (as stated). I am sure the smaller carb will work ok on a UK T80 engine but maybe at some loss of performance. I see the Greek has reduced the price to £36 plus £10 p&p in his latest advert http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-townmate-T80-mikuni-carburetor-/181757279474?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a5193fcf2 & in fairness has stated the part number of the carb & advises buyers to check before they buy. BUT it is still confusing as the UK T80 carb is also listed as a VM16SH confused
Looks like the Greek has been reading this forum :d\\'-\\':

Another new T80 carb from Greece Empty T80 carb more confusion on bore size

Post  JohnW Thu 28 May - 15:13

I have just measured a T80 carb and although it is 18mm at the flange where it bolts to inlet manifold, it then tapers down to an oval hole approx 18mm high by 14mm wide by the time it gets to the throttle slide. It would be this choke size that would be important. So maybe the VM16SH is nominally a 16mm carb NOT 18mm confused
The '22K' reference is actually a casting number on the head & cylinder (I have those numbers on a spare T80 head & cylinder) so they are not the model number. There are some pics in this advert showing them but engine number begins with 22F

Hi John,

I was communicating with him last night and apparently, the T80s in Greece ran the same carby configuration as the YFM 80 Raptor (throttle mechanism is different), I have no idea why it would have been needed to be different.

The part number for the UK edition of the carby is 35T 14101 02 but he was stating the part number for the carbys on the T80 there start with 46J. I must admit, the parts catalogue I have states England on the cover.

I doubt Japan would have made specific models for the Greek market as Yamaha Hellas would have been sourcing their stock from Yamaha BV Europe.

Is that seperate to Yamaha UK? (Mitsui Machinery)? confused

I am of the opinion that the carb is actually the smaller one as fitted to the T50, (I cant believe that Mitsui would have made another carb between the VM14SH (T50) & the VM16SH (T80). As Mitsui did not stamp the number on the carb one can only guess on what these are. I did have a T50 carb some years ago & it was definitely smaller than the T80.
One reason why Yamaha may have fitted a T50 carb on a T80 is to restrict the performance, particularly on the YFM 80 Raptor which is a kids bike. At the end of the day I would think the carbs that the Greek guy is selling would work ok on a T80 & the difference in performance would probably be infinitesimal, after all better than a knackered original carb.
He did say he had had no complaints from customers who have bought the carbs. Now reduced to £46 (inc p&p) the carbs do appear to be a bargain. How many of them has he got left?
