Exhaust Fitting - Surely this isn't right...

Guys,

I was looking at a Townmate yesterday and the exhaust was fitted as below - Surely this can't be correct? What's missing?

I assume you mean the fact that the clamping plate is a long way out from head. This would appear to be normal for some of the pattern exhaust systems being sold. The sleeve that the clamp presses on is longer than the original. I had to make up longer studs for mine. Main thing is that it seals ok to head. Fit a new copper sealing ring when you fit exhaust. If you use allen screws like in pic make sure they are long enough & have plenty of thread into head other wise the thread will strip. Frankly I think is best to use stainless steel studs that are screwed right in, then the clamp is secured with nuts & washers.

Mine's the same - pattern silencer and a previous owner replaced the studs with allen bolts. I have ordered the correct studs from my local Yamaha dealer (only £3 for the two) and will use stainless nuts. Will also use copperslip when fitting the studs as it should prevent them becoming rusted in.

Standard studs were not long enough on mine so made up to longer ones out of M6 stainless bolts

Hmm. Interesting - looks like I might need to do the same.
Currently doing an oil change and cleaning the gauze strainer. Evidently the first time in the bikes 30 years m(and 6,ooo miles) that the right hand crank case cover has been removed. I managed to get the toffee-headed bolts out with careful use of an impact driver and am replacing with Allen headed bolts.
