Hi all, I recently inherited a 1990 townmate in blue, lots of surface rust but nothing too serious. It runs although it's been stood for 10+ years, it's got all the gears and a couple of minor electrical problems. My question is do I get it through an mot or should I sell it as it is? I'm not a bike person really although I do quite like it, so I'm looking at getting rid of it one way or another. Many thanks for taking the time to read this and for any advice given.

I forgot to mention it's a T80 and it's got matching engine and chassis numbers.

I'm in somerset. I was thinking of sticking it through an mot anyway just to find out what would need doing. Definitely needs an exhaust and some work on indicators and horn but everything seems to work so far.

Do check & fix any obvious problems before taking it for MoT. ie lights, indicators, horn, brakes, tyres etc. It will be a definite fail if any of these dont work or are defective, lights & other electrics should be checked with engine running but give the battery a charge before hand, (it may need topping up with distilled water the stuff used in steam irons). Only indicators, horn & stop light work off battery, but rely on a charge from generator to work properly, tyres must have a minimum of 1mm tread & be free from cracks & properly inflated. You say exhaust is defective, best to do a temp repair with Gun Gum or other exhaust repair products. As long as its not noisy & no obvious leaks it will pass. You dont want to fork out for a new one (circa £45)  if the bike fails on something major. Finally give it a good clean & rub over rust with an oily rag so as to make it look as good as possible & not just removed from a barn.

Inherited a townmate Empty Worth getting it MOT'd

Post  andrewp Sun 25 Jun - 14:21

Welcome.  Yes, well worth the little extra time and effort to get through MOT.
I've just been with the Honda C90 club this weekend and they are very welcoming of Townmates - there was lots of interest in mine.  Worth placing a for sale add (with photos) on both this site and the Honda one before you start considering eBay.  The car and classic site  is also good (and free).........
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk

Advertising on Autotrader is free for bikes under £1,000

Hope this helps
