My new toy Empty My new toy

Post  Toffee Fri 25 Jan - 23:22

Hello to everyone
I've very recently bought a t80 (£125) that I found a in a garage just up the street from me following info from a friend during drunken discussion about small bikes
It's complete and a "D reg it hadn't been started for over 18 years
But after the usual squirts of oil in the right place
a new battery, plug and fresh fuel it started on the first kick
I'm very impressed with how this bike has fared during it's incarceration and I think it's going to be a good long standing friend
I've not ridden him (Stan) yet due to not knowing the condition of the brakes or shaft grease
Looking forward to picking your knowledgeable brains
Cheers

Welcome aboard Toffee, get yourself a Haynes Manual, many of the questions you may have will be covered in there.
Basically you need to service the bike fully, check brake linings (new shoes readily available from various outlets including eBay) change the engine oil (10 - 40 multigrade) and strip and re grease the rear drive unit (simple if you follow the Haynes manual), The grease you need is Castrol Spheerol https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/products/off-road/grease/spheerol-epl-2.html available from Castrol Classic Oils and other outlets in 500 gram tubs, enough for at least 3 replacements.
Have fun

Thanks John
I've got the Haynes manual, and I've ordered the grease and brake shoes front and back
I've just removed the back box and frame to fully inspect the rear end and I think it's going to be a long job
The join between the rear of the mudguard and body is poor
I think it's a full strip down and sandblasting with a tad of welding 😖
But you never get a minter for free (almost) and I intend to be in this for the long haul
Cheers

Yes that joint in rear mudguard is a notorious rot spot, also lower down where main tube terminates in swinging arm mounting. Its really worth stripping whole bike down an having the frame sand blasted and/or chemically dipped to reveal rust spots and then do the necessary welding.

Thanks John
I didn't know about the tube area. I think it's a case of biting the bullet and getting the lot done
At least it'll add value, so I'll always get my money back in the future
Cheers

Hi :d\\'-\\':

My bike is a silver grey one too. It looks as if yours would clean up nice. ( Rickman screen and top box - very period)

Cheers - good luck  Very Happy

Lots of surface rust in the tinware at the back end, definitely warrents a full strip down, sand blasting, welding etc. Done right it will keep the bike going for years to come. Left and it will get worse!

I agree John
My target for the first ride has changed
So has the budget, but should still end up with a cracker for the final total and still have a little equity left in
I've decided to go with paint as touch up costs will be lower in the long run over powder
What do you boys think ??
