How to Grease the Transmission?
Every few years, I grease the rear transmission gear in my shaft-driven Yamaha QT50.
The Townmate must need the same. On this bike, what is the procedure? My guess is the rear wheel needs to come off first. What needs to be undone then? Where do you put the grease here? I do not have a diagram on this yet.
Thanks.

Diagram here, http://www.yamahamotorcyclespares.co.uk/genuineparts/9063/21/yamaha%20t80%20townmate/drive%20shaft?uid=0
you need to dismantle rear drive. Use Castrol Spherol grease (120 grams) remove old grease first. Refer to the Haynes Manual (which I think you have) it explains how to do it

Haynes Manual (every owner should have one) says change final drive grease every 4000 miles or 6 months. In fact this can be doubled without ill effect.barker wrote:it says no need to touch unlike a chain so how many miles can you leave it before changing the grease one answer could you fit a grease nipple
Yes you could fit a grease nipple but that may result in over greasing & in any case old grease needs to be removed.

I would like to ask a few questions:
Because the user manual does not report anything about the maintenance of the bevel-box my information also comes from Haynes and what I have read in forums.
Are you sure that the bevel-box grease must be changed every 4000 miles or every six months; For me 4000 miles is about 6000 kms, and these are provided in six months.
I think it is better to have a chain final drive?
My bike has 53,000 km and I have changed grease for first time at 47500 km.
On what page of Haynes Service Manual written when we have to change this grease;
As the local Yamaha representative no longer provides the grease with code 90793-40001-00 ι should also have to look for something similar.
I have read here in the forum that the equivalent is Castrol Spheerol L-EPO.
The Haynes suggests the Shell TG093 # 00.
Has anyone used the Castrol to tell us his impressions;

Re: How to Grease the Transmission?
I have used the Castrol Spheerol & its fine, I would agree that the 4000 mile interval stated in the Haynes manual is a bit short, I would think about every 8000/10000 miles or every 2 years is sufficient. Always worth checking (and changing) the grease when you buy a bike. The problem is that the original grease that Yamaha used tends to dry out & then not lubricate the gears. The Castrol Spheerol (a mixture of oil & grease) appears to remain fluid.

Re: How to Grease the Transmission?
Thank you for the reply.
Unfortunately in my country, and after communication with the Castrol.gr, they informed me that they do not import the specified grease.
They informed me that it is a lithium grease with additives that help impact and have zero liquidity.
From eBay I can not order this because of the problem liquidity of banks in my country.
I searched also for Shell TG093 # 00 proposed by the Haynes but again I did not find information about this product.
I can not understand how the Yamaha remove a spare code and did not sent to the authorized workshops instructions about what will replace it or what they must do from now on.
If I drive my motorbike in a Yamaha garage and ask them to repair the bevel box what they do;
They will not proceed to repair because they did not have the grease, or they will use another grease; and what is it;
So I hope tomorrow when i will visit the Yamaha representative to be able to get more information.

Grease in Greece
If you cannot get the correct grease in your country you could use a standard light grease such as Castrol LM or equivalent & add some gear oil to it to make it fluid (thats basically what the Castrol Speerol is)

looking at the haynes manual, it shows the transmission diagram but I cant find exactly what to grease. Do I need to strip the lot and grease every bearing??

As per my previous post in this thread, you need to dismantle the drive unit, clean out all old grease & replace with 120 grams of new Castrol Spheerol
