Problem WITH MY TOWNMATE
Hello I have a 1981 Yamaha T80. The bike is being sitting for long time and it hasent being started for a tleast two years. The problem it has is that when you start it up you have to twist the acceleratior. And when it starts up it doesnt idle properly and if I put it into gear and move off it moves off but its Rpm goes down and up and eventually cuts off.
Anyone PLEASE HELP ???

You see if I am in first gear and I press the back of the gear leaver it makes strange noises from the gearbox ? Is it really a problem or its normal if the bike is being siting for a long time ?
THANK YOU

There will be a slight 'whirring sound' if you press on the lever when in gear either up or down. But nothing more, if it is then you have problems
either with the clutch or gearbox.

Can this become a problem later on maybe, because it happened and then it went off and worked fine.
its sort off you cant change to neutral when I tried to change this metal bang and drag sound came from the engine.
Or can this be caused because the bike was not being used for long ?
Thank you

Re: Problem WITH MY TOWNMATE
Yamaha don't MAKE gearbox problems!!!! I assume you mean do gearbox problems occur with the T80. Whilst I personally have not had any, & the T80 is not known for them, I am sure like any other mechanical device problems do occur through wear & tear & neglect. Frankly you may as well run it and see what happens & then if it gets worse buy another engine unit off eBay. The cost of new parts to repair your box would cost more than a good secondhand engine, & you would have the rest of the old engine for spares.

You quote a 1981 T80? Didn't the T80 run from 1983 to 1997? Are you sure it is not a V80 that you have?
But then again, like JohnW says just run it and see.

If its a T80 its 4 speed 4 stroke engine, Neutral is below 1st you cant get to it from 4th. You have to select 1st 2nd 3rd 4th then back down 3rd 2nd 1st neutral.

Re: Problem WITH MY TOWNMATE
Jason, dont worry too much about the kickstart problem , that will go away after some use,(they all do it).Use proper motorcycle oil in engine api rating SG or above(api code is on back of jar usually) car oil is not designed for wet clutch..you'll only need a litre.

Re: Problem WITH MY TOWNMATE
So you are saying that I should not replace the clutch. So I will get some New oil for it then. And the bike is being sitting for long time maybe thats why the clutch is not working properly.Frank1e wrote:Jason, dont worry too much about the kickstart problem , that will go away after some use,(they all do it).Use proper motorcycle oil in engine api rating SG or above(api code is on back of jar usually) car oil is not designed for wet clutch..you'll only need a litre.

Re: Problem WITH MY TOWNMATE
did you touch either of the screws on the side of the carb the one in a recess may even have a plastit cap over it needs to be gently wound in till it touches the stop then wound out one whole turn and three quarter turns the throttle stop screw will need to be wound out 3 or 4 turns once the bike is running with no choke turn the throttle stop screw in till the engine idles

Now the bikes idles perfectly, But what happens is that if the bike is cold and I put the choke one the bike started and then cut off. I tried to restart it many times but no signs of starting so I took the spark plug off and I saw that the spark plug is dark and the spark doesnt go in the middle but to side So I cleaned and put it back on and it started straight away. SO DO YOU THINK ANYTHING IS WRONG WITH THE CARB SETTINGS OR THE ENGINE IS BURNING OIL SO THE SPARK IS SO DARK ??? BTW the bike doesnt smoke
THANKS !!
