T80 and T80 bevel box
I've read somewhere on this forum that the T80 and T80 final drive boxes are identical. However when clearing out my garage I decided to compare, as I had one of each.
I found the ratios are actually quite different. The T50 one is 3.3:1 whereas the T80 one is almost exactly 3:1 reduction. The T50 bevel box is off to the scrap yard with all the other scrap metal on friday as I can't see it being any use of a T80 which is geared low enough already. Perhaps it would help for uphill mountain riding, but that's about all

T50 T80 Bevel box
Interesting, will check my spares to see what ratio they are. I think the pinion may be same on both with just the large gear with an extra tooth.
If that's so it may be worth keeping for the pinon & case. The splines on the input shaft part of pinion assy are prone to wear so it may help someone. Also there maybe a few T50's still out there, & a T80 used in hilly country may benefit from a lower ratio.
Have just looked at the handbook http://www.classiccycles.org/media/DIR_122/DIR_664222/DIR_784233/d6bbd1466c316161ffffb256ffffe417.pdf and the actual ratios are T50 3.589 & T80 3.166

Gaz, why on earth would you want to, the shaft drive is one of the best features of the Townmate. May as well get a c90.

You need to buy a Haynes manual (plenty on eBay) it tells you how to do it.
