Can anyone help--- can the rear shocks on the t 80 be dismantled  for restoration.

Short answer is no they cant be dismantled & have little or no damping even when new.
Best thing is to fit an after market set from Motor Cycle Products http://www.motorcycleproducts.co.uk/shocks-yamaha-t80-1983-97-p-256818.html
