Hi

I am buying a 3 owner 1993 8500 mile t80 that has covered 200 miles in the last two years and before that was stored in dry garage for 10 years. in June it had a basic service, new bat, new tyres and fresh fuel and mot and tax. Its in good condition apart from the headlight only works on high beam. the parking light works as do indicators and brake and back lights.

I will start by changing the bulb. What bulb do i need and do you think there could be some other prob. The other thing I am worried about is the oil in the shaft. How do i change it and what oil should I use.

Thanks

Steve

You need a 6volt 25/25 watt bulb like this http://www.startright.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=8668&zenid=3bb7378c3270f5f8d11ba9ca25bf1b32
There is no oil in drive SHAFT but REAR DRIVE unit needs re greasing every 4000 miles according to Haynes manual, but in practice every 8000 to 10000 should be fine. Worth doing now unless previous owner has supplied evidence of recently changing it. Use Castrol Spheerol L-EPO semi liquid grease NOT ordinary bearing grease. http://www.lkperformance.co.uk/additives-lubricants/castrol-classic/castrol-classic-spheerol-l-ep-o-grease-500ml/218724 You need to remove the drive unit & strip it down to replace grease, a messy job. How to do it is in the Haynes book. You definitely need one of these. The engine requires SAE 10W/40 type SE of SF oil, change it ever 1500 miles.

Motul Gear Oil is NOT SUITABLE for the T50/T80 final drive unit. It must be grease based. The Motul product is a 80/90 sae gear OIL & it will leak out through the oils seal.

I've used MOTUL oil gear for two years(2000km) in T 50 and 1 year(500km) in my t80--EVERYTHING is fine-I' check condition in to drive shaft for every 500km Very Happy

thanks, that info is great. I just insured the t80 (£64) tpft. Picking it up tommorow at 5, cant wait. My wife will be with me so that should be fun, not the best way to get used to it, Very Happy

Il pick a bulb up first though. How fast are they and do you think it will do 40mph two up.

Top speed 50mph max, will cruise at 40mph ok one or two up, but a strong headwind will knock it back to 30/35mph. MPG about 120 mpg.

Cheers

I am managing 40 on the flat, 55 down hill and 30 up hill. I checked the air filter and it had broken up so I put a new one in after treating is with recommended oil. I had to alter the idling on the carb, correct the tyre pressures and it was sorted,

Even though the oil has been changed, I would like to do it myself so I know its got the correct oil, I read that when you change the oil you should take the kick start off, the exhaust and foot peg to open the cover to clean out the oil filters. would you have to clean the oil filters every time a oil change is done as it seems a lot of work.

Thanks

Not not necessary if you change the oil regularly (every 1500 miles max) Maybe take cover off & clean filter every 10000 miles or so. The Haynes is a bit conflicting on oil changes etc, 4000 miles between engine oil changes is far too long

Cheers John

Ive been using the bike all week for work, getting used to it now, changing down when I have slowed down, etc.

Do you know where I can buy the blue paint? I think its Yamaha code 293?
there is a fair bit of surface rust and the wheels are badly corroded. Don't know what to do with them yet. Im getting around 90mpg mixed riding, I know some people say it should be 120mpg but i'm happy with that. taking the misses out on it today for a spin, seems to do the same speed two up or me on my own. Just concreted in a ground anchor, don't know the best chain and lock top get, I have £40 to spend on one. How do you put pics on this site?

Cheers
