Swing Arm Bolt Query,,,,, Help !!!!!
Hi All
Hope that you can help, trying to resurrect a 1988 townmate.
Swingarm completely rusted away, I have found replacement Swingarm as new......
Now the Problem
The Bolt has snapped off and seized in the frame, I have removed swingarm with an angle grinder, and screwed it off the bolt which is seized in the frame, I was hoping that i could then tap the bolt through the frame with a lump hammer, does this bolt screw into the frame and also the swing arm ? is that why I cant tap it through? any advice greatly accepted,

I have recently been through this problem myself. The bolt is not screwed into frame but gets rusted in. The only way is to drill out the bolt and old bushes. Problem is that there is a spacer between the two bushes which rusts to the bolt and also the frame tube. The problem is keeping the drill central on the bolt. In my case a friend with a lathe made up a drill guide which I managed to locate in frame tube after drilling away at the metalastic bush enough to get it to locate. The bolt is 12mm dia so start with a drill a bit smaller then open up with larger sizes until the remains can be removed. Be careful not to damage the ends of the tube in which the bushes fit, you will need to drill from both ends. You really need long drills. New bushes are available from Fowlers Motorcycles https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/view/3GB-22123-00 (they may not be in stock but they can get them in a few days) The spacer between them is no longer available so you will need to make one its 36mm long x 20mm dia with 12mm clearance hole .
Best of luck, take your time, dont rush the job, Make sure you get all the remains of old bushes out and cleaned up so new bushes will fit, note there is a shoulder in the frame tube that the bushes push up to, outer diameter fits flush with tube, inner protrudes and should be a good with with swinging arm. Dont forget to fit the spacer before you pull in second bush. Use a length of 12mm studding, nuts and spacers to pull in new bushes. Push them on outer diameter with a suitable spacer, I used a socket from a socket set.

Re: Swing Arm Bolt Query,,,,, Help !!!!!
Hi , many thanks for the reply, really appreciated, I have been spraying WD40 on it for some time now hoping that it will make a difference, its still not shifting when hitting with a lump hammer...
I am toying with the idea of heating the bolt with a blow torch as I heard that once heated it may tap out easier, my main concern here is damaging the bushes? other option is bringing to metal fabricator or the like to see what they can do ?
Again would love your suggestions !

Re: Swing Arm Bolt Query,,,,, Help !!!!!
The only way I found is as I said drill out the spindle, I tried penetrating oil even under pressure and it had no effect, also heat but in the end I had to resort to a drill. As for bushes I am afraid you will have to fit new ones as the originals will have to be destroyed in the process. The main problem is the spacer between the bushes which also rusts to the spindle and the frame tube. Maybe best to take it to a specialist. Best of luck

Update
Sorry for the belated response,,,,,, tried everything and gave up the ghost , stripped it down and brought shell of a frame to my local bike Shop ! fair dues to Harry at Swallow Motor Cycles Rayners Lane, he did exactly as John W suggested!
Only £70, he drilled it out and pressed in New Bushes, Result!
Now bring on the good weather to continue rebuild : )
