CDI/Coil
New CDI Unit from A J Sutton is £164.37 and the ignition coil is £60.59 (stupid prices)
If you buy a new coil on eBay you need one like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-MOTORCYCLE-IGNITION-COIL-6-VOLT-AC-SINGLE-WIRE-600317-/190710182515?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2c67367273 but make sure HT lead is long enough.
OR BETTER STILL THIS ONE SPECIFIC FOR T80 COMPLETE WITH PLUG CAP http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-T80-Townmate-83-95-Ignition-Coil-27909-/280908371434?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item41677195ea
I would try the coil first.

Re: How much is new CDI UNIT
I've experienced some CDI failures from the units with black sleeving on the wires. I believe that the later boxes with silver sleeving are more reliable.

I think I did well to get back home after loosing the spark, not alot you can do with cdi ,I wounder why I got the spark back after cleaning the pick up coil.I wounder if thats all it was or do the pick ups go dodgy, I hate intermitant faults.

My money is still on the CDI unit. Your symptoms correspond exactly with my failures i.e. intermittent before complete failure. I pulled one of mine apart and under all the silicon rubber is a circuit board with 20 or 30 discreet components including electrolytic capacitors. Remember that these are probably 30 years old so it's hardly surprising that they are getting tired. The opening up process was quite destructive so no chance of a repair.
The pickup coil and energiser coil in the generator are just coils so do not in my experience give any trouble so as long as connections are clean and tight should be O.K.
Doug.

Re: How much is new CDI UNIT
Thanks Doug,
I am going get another cdi in the week and try that,
This little bike should be great for my short comute to work all of which are little country lanes. about 15 minutes each way.

Re: How much is new CDI UNIT
Ive fitted another cdi and the spark now looks alot fatter and more blue than before,
The silly thing is as it as not tax or MOT yet I am unable to road test it
so I have to risk riding it to the mot station and hope its ok or or dodge a few back country lanes and risk prison how stupids that!
I will sling the lot in my van take it for a mot get some tax and and ride it round the block for 50 mile :)I recon its sorted

Re: How much is new CDI UNIT
Hope that the replacement CDI is the answer.
I'm sure that you know you can legally ride an untaxed bike to the MOT place provided you have prebooked the test and it is insured. You are not supposed to deviate too far from the direct route.
